belated summer 2007 post

I have not posted in like forever so after taking this afternoon off to play golf I thought that I would. Fall golf is probably my favorite. It is the end of the season, but the courses are softer than they have been and that is nice. We have had very little rain this summer and most courses are pretty dry.

How's this for my round today? 3 birdies, 4 doubles for a bizarre 83. Not my best effort. I had four sideways pitch outs due to missed fairways. Ugh. This round pushed my handicap to 6.6, which is fine, but I had it down to 4 earlier. I have not been playing much as of late and it shows around the greens. I did hit some pretty nice iron shots, including an 8 iron to about 10 feet on a par 3. Missed the putt, but I hit a good shot in.

I am working at Dick's Sporting Goods in the golf shop 15-20 hours per week. It's pretty cool. I love working with people on the hitting machine. Not so much for lessons per se, but for the ability to offer a tip here and there that the customer might take with them. Some are receptive, some are clueless. I hate the retail aspect of the job, but the golf stuff is cool. Dick's has some pretty weird ideas about moving stuff around the store on a regular basis.

Well, is it finally winter?

Today, January 9th, I put my clubs in the basement (again). The forcast for the rest of the week is finally winter-like. I cannot image that it's too good for golfclubs to sit in the cold trunk of my car. I did not get to play last week but many of my friends did. I was supposed to play Sunday afternoon but burned out on the couch in stead. A bit too tired to schlepp around the course after two tennis matches and two paddle matches in four days. Man am I old. The weather has been incredibly mild for this time of year. In fact, we have only had 4 inches of snow so far this year and normally we have over 20 inches by this date.

On a good note Joanie and I decided to cut back on our drinking for the new year and so far it has been a good idea for me. I have not had a drink since New Years Day and I have been trying to eat better (less) and drink more water. I also have been utilizing the gym at work in an effort to get a bit more limber and loosen up my back. It seems to be working so far.

Well, I may not get a chance to play again this season (is it this season or last year in January?) but I have to say that I played well this year. My handicap has never been less than 7 at the end of the year and it finished off at just over 5! Yea me!

We are not joining a club this summer for many reasons, one big one is the up front money it takes to do it. The next reason is that there are too many good golf courses nearby to tie yourself down to one place each summer. We are looking forward to playing the field this coming season.
